Nature Chapel

The chapel stands tall in its sunken territory. However, it has a feeling of place as its rigid walls are built with earth. It’s warm and complex in color. The ground is terraced to create places to sit for inhabitation and contemplation. As you descend down the terraced ground, the cycle of life – as plants grow and perish – can be observed along desert ground. Afternoon light can dance upon the movement of the mesquites and trace the pads of the prickly pear. Once you are ready to leave the stillness, the turn towards the exit brings you to a strong view of the Catalinas. . The morning light shines on you as you face them, but the afternoon light is behind you and it colors the mountains. With openings on the east and west, this chapel is situated to understand the rising and setting sun, and its affect on the nature around you. Light awakens the chapel in the morning, and the shadows of plants dance onto the chapel floor throughout the evening.
